'True Blood' star no Southern belle

Louisiana accent. Brooklyn accent.

Yes, they are very different. But in subtle ways, they are too much the same.

Brooklyn native Deborah Ann Woll, who plays budding teen vampire Jessica in True Blood, had to walk that fine line when she first took the role.

“In the very beginning the Southern accent was a challenge, because some of the sounds are kind of close to that Yankee, Brooklyn sound,” said Woll, 25. “So my problem was, when I would fall out of the Southern accent, I would fall into a Brooklyn accent, which sounds really, really wrong for the part.

“But that was in the first season. I felt much better by the second season.”

The third season of the savage and sexy True Blood gets under way Sunday, June 13 on HBO Canada. Woll still is pinching herself over the fact that her character has become a major part of this acclaimed series.

“I just auditioned — it was before any of the episodes had aired, but I imagine they were filming some of the ninth episode (in the first season) at the time,” Woll said. “It was just a guest spot, so we come in right before we’re needed. I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

“I came in with a bunch of other girls, we sat in a waiting room and took our turn. I had to do the first scene in the tribunal, which is very traumatic and dramatic, and then the scene in the woods with Bill (Stephen Moyer) after just being turned, which is very comedic. So they wanted to see someone who could span both places.

“I remember rolling around on the ground and eating my tears, just sort of spreading non-existent dirt into my face. But I guess that’s what they were looking for.”

The third season of True Blood — which, besides Woll and Moyer, stars Anna Paquin, Alexander Skarsgard, Sam Trammell, Ryan Kwanten, Rutina Wesley and Nelsan Ellis, among others — picks up right where the second season left off. So if you can, you might want to watch the season-two finale again as a refresher.

While Sookie (Paquin) panics over the abduction of Bill, Jason (Kwanten) tries to get back to his old skirt-chasing ways and Eric (Skarsgard) finds himself caught between the duelling agendas of two threatening bosses.

An overwhelmed Jessica, meanwhile, is dealing with the immediate consequences of having bitten a stranger. Sure, it was fun in the heat of the moment, but what does she do now? How does she cover her tracks?

“To give that much power to someone so young and inexperienced — and particularly this girl, who was sheltered and abused for so long — it’s a truly dangerous prospect,” Woll said.

“There is that beautiful childlike innocence and warmth and acceptance that children have. But they don’t understand sometimes the consequences of their actions.

“I do have fun with it. But I have to say, it also is very difficult. It’s like a child with a loaded gun.”
